Kurnik has established such a rapport with her patients that they call on her for all kinds of advice, not just when it comes to their kidneys. “They call me when their cardiologist tells them they need surgery, because they want my opinion. They’ll call me about dermatology, things I know nothing about,” Kurnik says. Because of her strong patient ties (she hands out her cell phone number regularly), she says it’s especially difficult when an ailing patient decides to let nature take its course. “I admire them; they are hard decisions,” she says. “I give them as much education as I can, but those are the ones that stand out.”

Allergy and Immunology
Dvorin recalls a memorable patient who had been suffering for 15 years from the worst case of asthma the doctor had ever witnessed. Medication was ineffective, but further investigation revealed that this person was suffering from a parasitic infection in their lungs. Thanks to Dvorin’s committed approach to treatment and a successful surgery, the patient was able to return to full health. Dvorin also has the unique role of tracking the pollen counts for our area, which allows him to find direct causes for his patients’ ailments. “It allows you to diagnose them and actually tell them what is causing their symptoms,” he says.

Bariatric Surgery
Gandsas takes great pride in helping obese patients reach a new level of health, but notes that his job is more than just helping people shed pounds. “The ultimate goal is not that they fit into a bathing suit for the summer,” he says. Instead, he works to not only help them lose weight, but also to combat related issues, such as heart disease, lung disease or diabetes. And he’s not just making a difference with adults, but self-conscious teenagers as well. By helping them drop their weight, he sees their self confidence skyrocket leading to a lasting social impact. “It’s the nice part of this specialty,” he says, “to give the patients a second chance at life.”

Obstetrics & Gynecology
As a mother herself, McCrosson knows exactly what kind of care expectant parents require. “I have two kids, so I tell people that I am going to treat them like I would want myself to be treated if I was pregnant,” she says. The strong relationship she has with her patients was never more evident than when McCrosson’s father was in a serious car accident last year and severely injured his spine. She routinely received phone calls from her patients checking on her, some even offering to babysit her kids. “[My patients] are like family,” she adds, “and that is so rewarding.”
Dr. Jenine Vecchio
Endocrinology
Seeing her sister battle thyroid issues and her grandfather struggle with diabetes, Vecchio was inspired to become an endocrinologist. “I grew up with it and wanted to help people,” she says. In only five years of practice, Vecchio has become a Top Physician thanks to her tireless efforts to give her patients a level of care that goes above and beyond. She encourages her patients to take a proactive approach to treating themselves by eating right and monitoring their sugars, but she also finds her one-on-one interactions with them especially gratifying. “You have to talk to patients. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on a lot,” says Vecchio.

Orthopedic Surgery
Raimondo, the son of a nurse, says his passion for orthopedics stems from his involvement in sports and his love for fixing things. Recently, the foot and ankle specialist treated a woman who was struggling to walk. She lived alone and didn’t have any friends or relatives in the area, making day-to-day activities a struggle. After the operation, she’s been able to get out of the house more regularly. For Raimondo, improving patients’ quality of life is what the job is all about. “Everybody that comes into my office, my job is to get them back doing what they like to do. That is the No. 1 goal,” he says.

Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility
The founder and director of the Delaware Valley Institute of Fertility and Genetics, Taliadouros is a pioneer in his field, developing several programs that have since become standards of care around the world. “The vision I had was to provide services in South Jersey that compete or match services available at institutions across the river … to develop new programs and be at the cutting edge of technology,” he says. With a background in research, Taliadouros has used his strong interest in technology and science to continue breaking ground in new areas of treatment. “It keeps you up in the middle of the night,” he laughs. “You get excited.”

Pediatric Ophthalmology
When Wexler was 4 years old, she was already wearng glasses. But, rather than be upset about sporting spectacles, she treated her once-a-year visits to the eye doctor like an event, complete with a train ride into Center City, Philadelphia. “I just thought it was the greatest thing ever,” she quips. Since 1989, she has been trying to give local kids that same feeling of wonderment. While technology has advanced quite a bit since her younger days, she sees similar results. “Giving a kid who couldn’t see glasses, you hear from their parents that their whole personality changes.”
Dr. Brad S. Tucker
Orthopedic Surgery
Tucker estimates that he handles somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 to 600 knee and shoulder reconstructions a year. But that doesn’t mean each case isn’t treated with the same attention and skill. One patient who experienced a full recovery was a young girl with a patella dislocation, who had multiple surgeries throughout her life but still felt lingering pain. Tucker realigned her whole knee, moving bones and balancing ligaments, and nearly six months later she was fully healed. The girl and her family “walked out of my office crying because it was the first time she hadn’t felt pain in a long time,” he recalls. For Tucker, it’s all in a day’s work. “I’m very passionate about my patients,” he says. “I don’t let someone leave my care until they’re satisfied.”

Plastic Surgery
First trained as a general surgeon, Back was drawn to plastic surgery after working in a hospital trauma unit. “One of the things that started to take a hold of me was that I saw that maybe the quality of your life might mean a little bit more than how long you live,” Back says. Through the years, Back has noticed a change in public perception when it comes to plastic surgery, once regarded as a trivial pursuit for the rich and famous. “Plastic surgery started to become another way for the average person to have a better life. And it sounds funny to put it in the same realm as going back to college or going to the gym, but I see it as all the same, because it’s all about expanding who you are as a human being,” he says.

Cardiothoracic Surgery
“I always say I went to medical school to be a heart surgeon,” says Rosenbloom, “Some are more interested in the brain or kidneys; for me it was always the heart.” Rosenbloom is among an elite group, as one of fewer than 1,800 doctors in the country who perform open heart surgery, so he understands the pressures involved in the job, as well as the importance of having a good support system. “It’s always life or death; the stakes are very high,” he says. “[The patient] has to trust in you more than any other doctor. But cardiac surgery is not just a one-man effort; you have to be surrounded by a very good team.”

Infertility
Sawin has been recognized across the country, as well as locally, for his outstanding work in his field—and this is the fourth year in a row that he has been named one of South Jersey Magazine’s Top Physicians. The overwhelmingly positive nature of obstetrics is what led him to his specialty. “Most of medicine is kind of sad; it’s ways the body is kind of failing. But fertility is all about how the body can work in a miraculous way,” he says. No matter how many babies he delivers, he still experiences the same joy each time. “You can help patients have a family, and to some people that is the most important thing in their life.”
