Ask the Expert: Rapha Dental
Dr. Mark Huh of Rapha Dental shares what patients should consider when choosing a dentist and why trust, communication and conservative care matter.
What should patients look for when choosing a dentist?
Choosing a dentist is about more than finding the closest office or one that accepts your insurance. You are choosing someone who may care for your teeth for many years, so trust and communication are just as important.
At Rapha Dental in Cinnaminson, I believe good dentistry starts with listening. Before recommending treatment, I want to understand why the patient came in, what concerns they have and what they hope to accomplish.
Patients should also expect their dentist to clearly explain what they see and why treatment is—or isn't—necessary. There isn't always only one solution. Depending on the situation, a tooth may be monitored, restored with a filling or crown, treated with root canal therapy, or, when necessary, removed and replaced.
A good dentist should explain the benefits and limitations of the available options so patients can make informed decisions without feeling pressured.
How important is a conservative approach to dentistry?
Very important. Modern dentistry gives us many excellent treatment options, but more treatment isn't necessarily better treatment.
Whenever possible, I believe in preserving healthy natural tooth structure and recommending treatment based on what the patient actually needs. Sometimes that means treating a problem immediately. Other times, the appropriate approach may be to monitor something rather than intervene.
Technology is also valuable. Digital imaging and 3D technology can help us diagnose problems and plan treatment more precisely, but technology should support good clinical judgment—not replace it.
What about patients who are afraid of going to the dentist?
Dental anxiety is very common. Some patients have had a difficult experience in the past, while others may have avoided dental care for years and feel embarrassed about returning.
There should be no embarrassment in coming back.
Taking time, explaining what is happening and allowing patients to feel in control can make a significant difference. At Rapha Dental, we place particular emphasis on gentle, unhurried care. For patients who need additional help relaxing, sedation options are also available when appropriate.
Why does comprehensive dental care matter?
Having many services available in one practice can provide better continuity of care. At Rapha Dental, we provide preventive and family dentistry as well as fillings, crowns and bridges, root canal treatment, extractions, dentures, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, clear aligners and emergency dental care.
That allows us to consider a patient's overall dental health and long-term goals rather than focusing only on an individual procedure.
What would you tell someone who has been putting off a dental visit?
Don't continue waiting because you're worried about what the dentist might find or what someone might think.
Whether it has been six months or six years, the first step is simply finding out where things stand. An examination gives you information. From there, you and your dentist can decide what needs attention now, what can wait and what options make the most sense for you.
Rapha Dental is an independent dental practice in Cinnaminson serving patients throughout Burlington County and surrounding South Jersey communities, including Moorestown, Delran, Riverton, Maple Shade and Willingboro. Evening and Saturday appointments are available for patients with busy schedules.
