How much motorcycle insurance should I buy?
Injured while riding your motorcycle from an accident with a vehicle?  Since your motorcycle lacks the exterior protection of a car and all the safety devices, usually you are very seriously injured, incurring significant hospital/medical bills and lost wages.  Your automobile medical coverage (Personal Injury Protection) will not cover your medical bills when injured while riding a motorcycle.  If you have health insurance, you may have a substantial deductible/co-payments.  Even if the driver of the other vehicle is at fault, they likely will not have enough insurance to pay for all your damages (NJ minimum required per person automobile liability insurance coverage is $15,000).

You need to protect yourself with the best insurance coverage possible.  What if the at fault party doesn’t have insurance (uninsured) or doesn’t have enough insurance (underinsured)?  For you, it comes down to your Uninsured (UM)/Underinsured (UIM) Motorist Coverage.  You should have $250,000 per person/$500,000 per accident, or if available, a $500,000 combined single limit (you will be required to have the same level of liability coverage).  This allows you to recover monetary damages for injuries and economic losses you sustained from your own motorcycle insurance policy.  You should also check to see if your automobile policy provides or excludes UM/UIM coverage while riding your motorcycle.
