Here’s the Scoop
Rhonda Branch and Sean Campbell are proud to serve local communities as franchise owners of Scoop Brothers, a pet waste removal company that is thriving across the country.

by Matt Cosentino
Like many reluctant fathers before him, Sean Campbell had to be convinced when his partner, Rhonda Branch, and their two sons wanted to add a dog to the family about a year ago. He eventually gave in to their wishes, with the understanding that the boys would walk and clean up after their new pet, at least a majority of the time.

It didn’t quite work out that way, but at least he and Branch got a business out of it.

The couple are the proud owners of the first New Jersey franchise of a national brand known as Scoop Brothers, a residential and commercial pet waste removal company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Serving Burlington and Camden counties, with the potential to expand further in South Jersey, they not only remove waste but also deodorize the client’s property so it remains fresh and clean.

Local residents who love their furry family members but don’t have the time in their hectic schedules to clean up after their pet can take advantage of Scoop Brothers’ services on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or bi-monthly schedule. One-time clean-ups are available as well.

It may also be appealing to seniors not physically capable of cleaning up after their pet, families looking after young children or pet owners with multiple dogs. Branch and Campbell understand the need, having previously hired someone for the task when their sons were not interested in getting their hands dirty with Ace, the family’s beloved Cavapoo.

A few months later, they were looking to start a business to go along with their flourishing careers in the finance sector, and it didn’t take long for this idea to take shape.

“We wanted to find something that was actually needed in the community,” Campbell says. “The fact that we actually hired someone to do the job for us, it just made sense that if we had an opportunity to own a franchise like this, why not do it? I assumed that at least some people were feeling the same way I did, that they needed someone to pick up dog poop in the backyard. Before Rhonda found someone, I didn’t even realize this was actually a service that someone provided.”

While Campbell is from The Bronx, Branch was raised around pets in South Jersey and has been a dog lover since she was a kid. Her parents and sister still live in the area, and she and her family moved back to Voorhees from New York about 16 years ago.

“I take pride in growing up here,” she says. “I serve on the Voorhees Planning Board and my sister serves on the Board of Education. We’re involved in the community, so it’s awesome that we also get to serve in this kind of way as well.

“These neighborhoods are just filled with dogs. We did a lot of research into industry trends and where we think business is going to come from, and people are spending a ton of money on their pets. We felt this area was ripe with these opportunities, so it was attractive to us in terms of having something we can grow, serving a purpose in the community and helping those families.”

While they are both holding onto their full-time jobs, there is no question they are fully committed to Scoop Brothers.

“We wanted to sink our teeth into something for us,” Branch says. “We both have worked for large corporations for a long period of time. While it’s stable, it’s lucrative, it provides health insurance and it helps pay for college—which is all great—I think the opportunity to create something that we own and we control, while also setting a precedent for our boys, was attractive.”

The positive feedback they are already getting from existing and potential clients has affirmed that they made the right decision.

“I’m wildly excited at the emails that are coming through from people requesting quotes or signing up for service,” Campbell says. “I want to have a conversation with everyone who comes through the system and explain who we are. It feels like I’m always working but it’s fun right now and I’m enjoying it.”

While praising the support they are receiving from the Scoop Brothers corporate team, Branch and Campbell have hit the pavement hard to let people know about their offerings. They recently attended the Animal Welfare Association’s Paws & Feet 5K at Cooper River Park and the Voorhees Juneteenth Celebration, with plans to participate in the Voorhees Animal Orphanage Woofstock event in September.

They are also partnering with local apartment complexes, municipalities and dog parks to provide dog-waste stations and then service to those areas.

“We’re going to make sure we have a presence in the community, especially for those pet-focused events, just so people know who we are and how to reach us,” Branch says. “If you have a dog and you’re in need of this service, please check us out. We’re a local, homegrown company and we really want to help the community.”
