The 10 Spot: Pizza
A closer look at some of the best pies across South Jersey.

by Pete Proko
Our love affair with pizza runs deep and so we are very excited to introduce our newest food section with a closer look at some of the best pies you will find across South Jersey. These superb selections balance comfort with creativity and are just some of the reasons the region has become a destination for quality pizza.

Signature at Tacconelli’s Pizzeria in Haddon Township and Maple Shade
A classic that continues to stand the test of time, this delectable white pie’s highlights include the wonderful dough with just the right snap and chew, chopped tomatoes, slices of mozzarella cheese, spinach and a healthy dose of garlic for good measure.

Stinger at Bricco in Cherry Hill and Westmont
Aged, hand-stretched dough sets the stage for creamy buffalo mozzarella, tomato and spicy soppresata before it’s blistered in a custom-made coal-fired oven and finished with drizzles of honey, basil and mint.

Vokda, Hold the Tonic at Back Door Pizza in Cherry Hill
This pizza speakeasy operating out of the rear of The Farm and Fisherman has gained a loyal following thanks to its wonderful array of pies, including this one covered in a flavorful vodka sauce, topped with a mozzarella-provolone mix and a spiral of pesto sauce.

Bada Bing at Brooklyn Original Pizzeria in Haddon Heights
Available both round or square, this tantalizing creation features a slightly fiery marinara sauce, crumbled sausage, chunks of mozzarella and burrata, sprinkles of Parmesan, a slight touch of extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil.

Original Tomato Pie at Lillo’s Tomato Pies in Gloucester City and Hainesport
If you are lucky enough to snag a pizza at this always bustling hotspot, make it this one. An homage to Trenton-style tomato pies, this is the real deal with crispy, crackery crust that is topped with mozzarella and an intoxicating tomato sauce.

Fig and Smoked Prosciutto at La Scala’s Fire in Glassboro and Marlton
Sweet, savory and scintillating, this pizza offers ribbons of prosciutto, a rich fig jam, crumbles of gorgonzola and a vibrant basil pesto atop a dough that has been beautifully blistered in a wood-fired oven.

The Works at Santucci’s Original Square Pizza in multiple locations
This aptly named pizza is an amalgamation of extra cheese, thinly sliced pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, diced green peppers and onions all balanced with a crisp, golden-brown crust formed in well-seasoned cast iron pans.

The Paula at Johnny’s Pies in Medford
Johnny’s prides itself on using organic, farm-fresh ingredients, and you can taste the quality in every bite. That goes especially for this wonderful offering that combines a blend of mozzarella cheeses, roasted local mushrooms, caramelized onions, sliced cherry tomatoes, a dusting of pecorino Romano and a little added hot honey.

Rugola at Luigi’s Pizza Fresca in Marlton
A favorite of many on our staff, this white pizza is cloaked with a bed of arugula, sliced tomatoes, prosciutto and shaved Parmesan, resulting in a well-rounded pie that hits all the right notes.

Clams Casino at Ash & Oak in Williamstown
This restaurant has grown in popularity thanks to offerings like this wood-fired pizza starring fresh-chopped clams, bacon, red peppers, red onion and mozzarella, all lovingly placed atop a sesame seed crust with squeezes of lemon.
