The Doctors Are In

by Photo by Paul Loftland

Whether they’re interested in karate or cooking, carpentry or crocheting, South Jersey women all share one thing in common—they’re extremely discriminating when it comes to their physicians. Fortunately, our region boasts outstanding medical professionals across a broad range of specialties. This year’s roster of top doctors for women, compiled by third-party medical information provider Best Doctors, includes the best of the best. We also bring you a list of doctors recommended by our readers, who voted online in droves. Read on to meet these elite physicians and learn what drives them to deliver the best care.

Dr. Martha Matthews (pictured), Plastic Surgery
On her love for the job … “Plastic surgery is a field where there is a lot of variety, so it keeps things interesting. I do a lot of reconstructive surgery, and in some of those cases it’s almost like magic. How could you do anything else if you are able to do that?”
If she wasn’t a doctor she’d be …“A physicist. Physics was my favorite subject in college.”
On changing patients’ lives …“Part of what we do is make people feel good about themselves. When you have someone whose body isn’t matching where their mind is, where they don’t look like they feel … helping that to match can be a life changer for them.”
On unwinding from the stress of the job …“I like concerts, ballet, museums—I’m an artsy person.”

Dr. Anthony Corrado (pictured), Plastic Surgery
On the importance of patient care … “All cases are special cases in plastic surgery, as we always strive to effect physical changes, which inevitably produce substantial effects on patients’ personalities and moods.”
On the difficulties of the job … “My biggest professional challenge is to continually strive to perfect my surgical skills, because plastic surgery is a specialty in which B+ work is not tolerated.”
On what drew him to plastic surgery …“I went into plastic surgery because it is a specialty which provides a diversity of patient experiences which require both impeccable surgical skill and artistic imagination to solve both reconstructive and cosmetic issues.”

Dr. Charles T. Leng, Cardiology
On what drew him to cardiology …“It’s a wonderful opportunity to use my experience and my education to help people, and it’s really the best decision I ever made going into cardiology, specifically cardiac electrophysiology. In my specialty, I can actually do a procedure that can cure patients 95 percent of the time, or give them a life-saving defibrillator or pacemaker.”
On long work hours … “When it comes down to it, the patients always come first, and that’s why I got into this profession.”
On a most memorable patient …“One of my first patients out of fellowship training was a woman who had been told for years that she had anxiety-panic disorder. She had recurring palpitations that were so unpredictable and debilitating that she was afraid to leave the house. I suspected an arrhythmia, and performed a cardiac electrophysiology study that identified an aberrant electrical connection in her heart. I was able to ablate the ‘short circuit’ with a minimally invasive catheter ablation procedure that cured the problem permanently.”
On patient care…“If we approach patients with an open mind and take the time to really listen, then each patient can help us to find the best way to assist and treat them.”

Dr. David L. Fischman, Cardiology
On how he unwinds … “Sports, either playing or observing … reading—anything but medicine.
On the rewards of a long career …“I’ve been doing it for 21 years. You take good care of the patient and they really appreciate it. I think that is the most rewarding thing.”
On how the job has changed over time … “Technologically, the advances are dramatic. The equipment we have is so advanced, you can do a lot more these days. That’s the good thing. The bad thing is what we are doing with medical health care in general.”
On educating women about heart disease …“In this country, people think heart disease is a man’s disease, but it’s not. People think breast cancer, but heart disease is the No. 1 killer of females. Part of the reward [in helping women] is that we’re there to educate the community that heart disease is important.”

Dr. Alisa Modena, Obstetrics and Gynecology On a most memorable patient …“My first year of practice, there was a woman who came in who was a surrogate with triplets for another woman who had multiple losses. The surrogate was in there for four days, and she had four or five kids … it was the surrogate and her husband and the other couple—and I walked in the room and they just pounded me with questions. I remember walking out of there thinking they hated me and they’ll never want to see me again. [Today], I get yearly birthday cards and Christmas cards [from the family], and I always think of them.”
On the biggest challenge of the job …“Balancing my family with my job. I have two little kids, so doing the normal mom stuff and working full time.”
On her passion for the Phillies …“We have one of the Phillie Phanatic art statues in our house; we are such huge [fans]. My favorite Phillie is Cliff Lee, [though] my kids will want me to say Chase Utley.”

Dr. Eric Grossman, Obstetrics and Gynecology
On choosing his specialty … “I like obstetrics and gynecology because it gives me an opportunity to form long-term relationships with people, to be with them during the best times of their life and also to help when there are problems. I like surgery, so it also allows me to push myself into staying up with new technologies and being able to offer people really the most advanced technologies that are available.”
His biggest passion outside of his career … “My passion is going home to my wife and four kids, which is fun and busy.”
On how being a parent has changed him …“As an obstetrician, having my own children, you understand the fears, the concerns. You can appreciate the difficulties and the excitement they go through with pregnancies. Having been one of three siblings, with an older and younger sister, being around a lot of female relatives my entire life, I think I’ve always appreciated and respected women. And I think about them when I am discussing surgical options, or wellness with my patients: How would I want someone to address this with my mother, my sister or my daughter?”
