Love the Skin You’re In
Dr. Joshua Freedman recently opened New Jersey Dermatology and Mohs Surgery to better reach patients in need of individualized, attentive care with proven—and lasting—results.

Growing up, Dr. Joshua Freedman thought his career path would be guided by either inheriting his father’s artistic talents or a well-nurtured fascination with reconstructing his mother’s discarded appliances into something new.

But when long nights in Drexel University’s labs put him in close enough proximity to the University of Pennsylvania’s ER to begin volunteering there, Dr. Freedman realized he’d found his true calling in medicine.

“I was an engineer and an art major, and my father was an artist who never wanted me to go into art because he didn’t want me to starve,” Dr. Freedman begins with a laugh. “But my path really has been art: As an engineer, physician and surgeon, it comes into play routinely in all those things. When I perform surgical repairs, when I do cosmetics, when I repair people’s skin, it’s all engineering and art to me.”

Following his heart has guided Dr. Freedman well. Most recently, the dermatologist opened up a new private practice in Swedesboro, the state-of-the-art New Jersey Dermatology and Mohs Surgery. Now Dr. Freedman can keep doing what he loves in a way that’s not only authentic to his high-energy, deeply personal approach to dermatological care but also ensures that his team and patients appreciate the experience just as much as he does.

“I went into medicine to help people, and I got to a point where I was ready to take on the challenge of seeing if I can make the best possible place to work and receive your dermatology care, and to create a positive environment where kindness and happiness are contagious,” says Dr. Freedman. “It’s really exciting to get to build each little detail from the ground up: I obsessed over the selection of every single finish—with significant help from my wife—and I designed the entire practice striving for both the greatest feel and efficiency. I want this to be just a luminous space, I want this to feel like the nicest place you’ve ever walked into and then have the best experience possible.”

Having thrown open his practice’s doors about a month ago, Dr. Freedman is now thoughtfully managing his practice’s growth to position it for the greatest future impact. And delivering world-class care goes beyond Dr. Freedman’s board certification, an education that includes one of the country’s top-10 dermatology residencies and being “exquisitely well-trained in medical dermatology, surgical dermatology and pediatric dermatology:” It’s rooted in making sure that every patient feels heard, seen and holistically treated in an environment where their health and comfort are paramount concerns.

“For everything from general acne to eczema to psoriasis, I am well versed in all the advanced treatment options, and I have a level of training that I think can really be of use to people who are struggling,” he affirms, adding that he’s here for “anything people need treated,” including issues with patients’ eyelids, fingernails, skin and even hair loss. “I used to spend a lot of time solving complex medical dermatology cases and sorting out obscure allergic contact dermatitis. I can do anything within the scope of the specialty.”

The results of that approach have generated some incredible word-of-mouth praise and impassioned recommendations that have yielded months-long wait times to see him at his prior workplace—which was also a significant factor in opening New Jersey Dermatology and Mohs Surgery.

“I [recently] saw a woman who drove two hours to my new office because another patient of mine told her that I was the best dermatologist they’d ever seen, and she had been too scared to see one for years. It’s incredibly rewarding when people appreciate my work and they trust me with their medical care,” Dr. Freedman recalls. “I honor that trust by doing my best with every patient so that I continue to earn it every visit.”

That human connection, combined with professional perfectionism and “an obsessive need to understand how everything works,” makes for meticulous, individualized care. Dr. Freedman believes that a mix of curiosity and careful attention to detail allows him to uncover the underlying causes of difficult cases and find solutions that truly help: “With careful listening and a bit of detective work, I can often find answers for patients who’ve struggled to find solutions.”

And, true to his roots, the former engineer is excited to combine world-class medical training, cutting-edge technology, modern treatments, diligent research, and attentive, personalized care to deliver an incredible experience to both longtime and first-time patients alike.

“Treating patients is the most fun part for me. I’ve mastered many aspects of dermatological care but truly thrive on learning about new medical advances and incorporating them into practice. The patient-physician connection is always so enjoyable. The ability to get them the results they hope for, and the reciprocation of gratitude—I love all that!” Dr Freedman says. “[This practice] will let me convey my authenticity, my love of this craft, my desire for all of us to have a great time whether we are at the doctor or at work, and where there are passionate people who just want to make your visit an awesome one.”
