As a lifelong athlete who played soccer in college and continues to compete in adult leagues to this day, Aubrey Boegly, APN, has always been fascinated with the human body and how it functions. Along with her growing interest in holistic care and preventative health, she was inspired to pursue a career in medicine, and has been fortunate to serve in many roles along multiple stops on her professional journey.
Now she’s back home in South Jersey, and she couldn’t be happier to be serving local communities at a practice that is a perfect match for her approach to patient care.
Boegly, a board-certified nurse practitioner, is the latest addition to Advocare South Jersey Internal Medicine, the thriving Marlton practice led by Minhaz Karim, MD. She and her husband recently bought a house in Haddon Township after living in Philadelphia for about seven years, and she was looking to take her career to the next level.
“I was definitely familiar with Advocare—I grew up going to Advocare pediatricians, so I know the group well,” she says. “I met with Dr. Karim and his wife, who is also a doctor, and it felt like a great fit. I was really excited for this opportunity and the transition has been great.”
Calling Dr. Karim “a wealth of knowledge,” Boegly clicked with him right off the bat based on their shared philosophy of treating patients holistically and emphasizing prevention. She explains that it makes far more sense to address the root causes of health issues—or prevent them altogether—rather than repeatedly managing symptoms month after month.
“We definitely connected on personalized, collaborative care for patients, where the main goal is empowering them to become partners in their health and to take ownership in their longevity,” she says. “That all starts with building trust and relationships, and that’s something this practice has done a great job of. They have patients who have been with them for years and have followed Dr. Karim from previous offices—that shows the trust he’s built. Instead of coming in and seeing a different provider every time, when you follow with someone long term, we see the best health outcomes.”
Between her training in residency and her previous work in both FQHCs (Federally Qualified Health Centers) and the emergency room setting, Boegly brings experience in several specialties. No matter what, she always believes that education is the key to building rapport with patients and giving them the best care possible.
“When patients understand the reasoning behind why we write prescriptions or suggest lifestyle changes and they can connect that to their own body and their own health, it’s going to stick better and they’re going to want to buy in more to their own health,” she says. “My passion is in family care, I love women’s health and I love young adult care, as well as chronic disease management. I come with a lot of knowledge from those different areas that crosses over into primary care.
“For example, of course we’re not a specialized OB/GYN, but every day I see women who deal with a number of unique health concerns that cross over into primary care. I think having a wide variety of exposure prior to this job just makes me a more well-rounded practitioner, which in turn allows me to better help each patient.”
Boegly is also grateful to be at a practice where providers are encouraged to take their time with each patient and to make sure their concerns are addressed. Advocare is flexible to meet busy schedules, offering extended evening hours and opening one Saturday per month.
“Dr. Karim gives us a longer time slot than many practices offer, which is unheard of these days,” she says. “Because of that, we’re able to take the time to listen, and I think that’s where trust starts. When patients go to see their PCP, it can often feel vulnerable discussing their health. Patients deserve to get their provider’s full attention, to feel heard and to feel like we’re engaged in their care. Everybody’s health journey is unique, so to meet them where they’re at, to be consistent, and to give them empathy and respect is how you build trust.”
All of those factors add up to Boegly feeling that Advocare will be her professional home for quite some time.
“I would love to be here long term,” she says. “Dr. Karim has already been a great mentor to me, and his compassion for his patients is clear. He’s been building relationships with his patients for years and years, and that’s what I aspire to do. You get to see them through different health journeys and through important parts of their lives. I feel part of the team already, I’m excited to continue that and I plan to carry forth the values and the mission of Advocare.”
