From time to time, the nightly news will report on a personal injury case in which the plaintiff was awarded millions of dollars for pain and suffering endured as the result of an accident. The initial response by many is to be envious of the suddenly wealthy individual, as if he or she had just cashed the winning lottery ticket.
But after 30 years as a personal injury attorney, most of them spent representing such victims, David Karbasian knows as well as anyone that the physical discomfort, mental anguish and uncertainty over their futures that his clients must face is nothing to be jealous of.
“It really takes a toll,” he says. “If you ask them if they’d rather have $5 million or their full health, 100% of the time they’re going to say they want their full health. People don’t always understand that part of it. Whenever I see someone dealing with a serious injury or a disease like cancer, it really resonates and hits home.”
He founded the Law Offices of David J. Karbasian, PC, to fight for those injured in car accidents, slip and falls, motorcycle and truck accidents, work injuries, construction site accidents, and any other serious injuries. Because Karbasian and his team see people going through one of the worst periods of their lives, they make it a point to treat them like family members and do their best to bring about a timely solution to their case.
While other attorneys will make outrageous claims about the large settlements they can deliver or try to gain attention with flashy commercials on television, that approach has never been Karbasian’s style. Even though he is a Lifetime member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, which is only for attorneys who won Multi-Million verdicts and settlements, he prefers to stand out with a proven track record, a dogged work ethic and a determination to stand by his clients.
“I think what people like about me is that I’m not going to promise them they can collect millions like some of the lawyers you see on TV,” he says. “I’ve had those cases, but not everybody has the same case or the same injuries. I never promise clients they’re going to be retired for life but I do promise I will fight for them, which clearly is reflected in our clients’ testimonials on our website.
“They get hurt through no fault of their own and all of a sudden they can’t work and they don’t know how they’re going to pay their bills. It’s a battle of attrition. Insurance companies will try to wear you down and you have to be in it for the long haul. I let clients know we just have to stay the course.”
It is clear that Karbasian has the same passion for his job today as when he first entered the field. He was motivated to go into personal injury law as a young man, when he sat on a jury in a case where an insurance company accused an elderly woman of theft when she was simply trying to be reimbursed for a dining set damaged in a house fire.
“I felt bad for her—I think everybody on the jury did,” he says. “Here’s this elderly lady going against an insurance company that reported her, and she had to hire an attorney and go through a criminal trial. That was my inspiration for attending law school. I have always liked the heroics of the underdog.”
Karbasian actually spent time as a defense attorney representing insurance companies early in his career, before joining a plaintiffs’ firm and then eventually founding his own practice. Having worked on both sides of the aisle and participated in a wide range of cases, his breadth of knowledge goes a long way for clients facing a long road to peace of mind.
“I always wanted to start my own firm and use my experience to help people,” Karbasian says. “I finally took my shot in 2005 and made the move and it has been very rewarding to see how many clients I have helped over the years.
“My experience as a defense attorney is absolutely a benefit to my clients. I understand the insurance carriers: what they do, when they do it and why they do it.”
After Karbasian has taken a case, he commits fully to it and is accessible to clients for the duration, keeping them informed throughout each step of the journey. He looks forward to representing them in court if necessary.
“You have to let insurance carriers know who’s willing to try a case and who’s not,” he says. “I’m a big believer that once you’re in for a penny, you’re in for a pound. I’m all in once I take your case.”
Karbasian believes in giving back to the community away from the office as well. He annually sponsors a charity golf outing with the proceeds benefiting St. Vincent de Paul, Family Promise and 1st Way of Burlington County. He has been recognized for his service to his church, and he also volunteers with his staff at a local soup kitchen.
“I have always enjoyed helping people, there is no better feeling,” he says. “That carries over to my law practice. I will do whatever I can to get my clients the best results possible.”
