Whether in his professional or personal life, Ron Hodge’s guiding philosophy is simple: Always do the right thing. For him, this means ensuring his loved ones are cared for, his employees feel valued, his community thrives and his clients have the tools they need to succeed.
This dedication to helping others has been the driving force behind Cornerstone PEO since its founding nearly a decade ago. From its historic location on Medford’s Main Street, Cornerstone offers essential business services like payroll management, workers’ compensation programs, risk management and HR solutions—or, as Ron puts it, the company handles “all the non-revenue-producing functions of a business.” But what truly sets Cornerstone apart from larger competitors is an unwavering commitment to putting the client experience first.
“I saw how many of our competitors operated, and I knew it could be done more efficiently—with a greater focus on the client,” Ron explains. “We aim to build genuine relationships with the businesses we serve, turning clients into partners. We tailor our software and programs to meet the unique needs of each client, rather than forcing them to adapt to us.”
Cornerstone’s emphasis on personalized service has fueled its remarkable growth. In 2019, the company processed around $50 million in payroll; today, that figure has soared to nearly $700 million. With eight locations spanning multiple time zones and a client base that has grown from just six businesses to over 3,400, Cornerstone has evolved while still retaining its small-business feel.
The company also became a family affair in January 2018, when Ron’s son Stephen joined the team. Initially growing at a steady pace, the business began to accelerate as Stephen recruited trusted friends and family members to Cornerstone, including his two childhood best friends, his aunt, godmother and his brother-in-law.
“We’re fortunate to be surrounded by good, hardworking people with strong ethics and dedication,” Ron says.
Accessibility remains key to Cornerstone’s success. “Every one of my clients has access to me,” Ron shares. “That’s been the case since day one, and we’ve kept that approach. Our client service department, led by Barb Schwing, is available 24/7 to assist with any concerns. Barb has built an incredible team of dedicated employees who play a critical role in Cornerstone’s success.”
Stephen, now Cornerstone’s CEO, reflects on the company’s technological advancements and its rapid growth. “We saw gaps in the industry—especially in terms of technology. Together, we brought Cornerstone into the 21st century. Leveraging technology helped us scale vertically. In 2018, we had four employees; today, we have about 62.”
The close-knit nature of the team—comprising family members, lifelong friends and trusted neighbors—has fostered a warm, collaborative culture that extends to clients.
“When someone’s leaving the office, they’ll stop by to see if I need help with anything,” Stephen says. “It’s great to know we’re all in this together, supporting each other.”
Despite the old adage about not mixing business with family, Stephen laughs that “we did the opposite. But everyone’s on the same ship, rowing in the same direction.”
Beyond their business achievements, Cornerstone has made a lasting impact on the community. The company actively supports charitable causes like the Ronald McDonald House and Seneca Unified Basketball—two organizations that hold special meaning for the Cornerstone and Hodge families.
As Cornerstone continues to grow in size and reputation, its heart remains rooted in service.
“We take a lot of pride in helping small businesses,” Stephen affirms. “Knowing we can provide them with affordable solutions to keep their operations running is incredibly gratifying. Our clients trust us, and we’re all in this together.”
