Donuts are delightful in any capacity, but when they are adorned with exciting flavors, a bubble shape and a fun texture, it’s difficult to return to any average donut. Mochiatsu provides a next-level donut experience that highlights a range of tastes, from classic to inventive.
The over 20 flavor options include milk chocolate, strawberry glaze, Oreo, Nutella, funnel cake, black sesame, ube, taro and many more. Seasonal menus are also offered, and a pumpkin spice donut is next on the rotation for autumn. Undoubtedly, these create beautifully colored treats with a unique design perfect for snapping a picture and sharing on social media. Mochi donuts’ categorical airy feel in culmination with the exquisite flavor means that they taste as good as they look.
“The texture is really similar to a funnel cake. It's crispy on the outside and chewy and airy on the inside. Since we make it with a mixture of glutinous rice flour and regular wheat flour, it has a texture that other donuts might not have,” explains Mei Liu, manager of Mochiatsu in both Mount Laurel and Glassboro.
Donuts are not the only culinary delicacy offered on the menu, which consists of bubble teas and Korean rice dogs as well. For just $11.99, customers can enjoy one of each as a part of a promotion that allows them to have not only a full meal, but a complete experience of savory and sweet tastes. Additionally, indulging in two bubble teas at once or with a friend will provide a third for free as a part of another promotion. Liu says to expect more in the future as her team collaborates on ideas that will enhance the customer experience.
Bubble teas have their own plethora of options. First, choose from fruit, milk or yogurt tea. The milk is non-dairy, the yogurt is probiotic and all tea is freshly brewed. Liu recommends a refreshing fruity green tea for summer, which is a lighter option than milk or yogurt tea. Milk and yogurt teas make excellent dessert drinks and are a bit more filling. It is almost too difficult to choose, obligating customers to return time and again to try them all.
If savory is preferred, Korean rice dogs—often referred to as Korean corn dogs—-are another example of expanding the standard to new heights. Stuffed with 100% beef hot dogs and mozzarella cheese, they are crispy on the outside. Variations include Hot Cheetos, potato, ramen or corn flake coatings, as well as an all-cheese, no-meat version so vegetarians do not have to miss out. Sauces dipped or drizzled on top complement the rich flavors from the outside and within.
“I always describe it as: it's similar to a regular corn dog, but we also use rice flour in our batter, and it's similar to the texture of our donuts. It’s also airy inside and very light, and we cover it in a breadcrumb batter—a Japanese breadcrumb called panko batter—on the outside,” Liu affirms.
The environment inside both Mochiatsu locations is harmonious with its menu: vibrant and inviting. It is designed to be the perfect place to sit and enjoy a donut, corn dog or tea with loved ones. The welcoming staff enhances the experience even further.
“Just the environment working here,” responds Liu when asked about her favorite part of managing Mochiatsu. “We're all pretty friendly and also just like going in and seeing all of the pretty donuts makes my day.”
The team at Mochiatsu is passionate about sharing their creations with the community, and those who taste them immediately see why. With several locations across the country and more opening soon, there is much to look forward to in its future. Regardless of growth, Mochiatsu treats will always be served sprinkled with delight.
