Well, we’ve done it again. We spent the last 12 months scouring the South Jersey area for the finest things we could find. From unforgettable food and blissful spa treatments to lively activities and impressive retail shops, our annual Best of the Best is a celebration of all that South Jersey has to offer. This year’s roundup is full of places that are certainly worthy of the spotlight, but we’ve also included readers’ picks as well. Read on to find out where you should be visiting next.
Food & Drink
WATER ICE at Primo in Cherry Hill and Westmont
For nearly three decades, this institution has scooped up cup after cup of this smooth, sweet treat in a wide variety of flavors. Think familiar favorites like cherry and lemon as well as more adventurous options like chocolate banana and mojito.
REUBEN AT Marino’s of Mullica Hill
This superb sandwich starts with homemade corned beef piled high with slices of Swiss cheese and topped with sauerkraut and Russian dressing, all of which are stacked in between two slices of butter-toasted marble rye bread.
CATERING at Rastelli’s Market Fresh in Deptford and Marlton
Whether you need food for your breakfast meeting, lunch for the family or dinner to feed numerous guests during the holidays, Rastelli’s impressive menu options are far from run of the mill. And with enough variety to satisfy everyone’s tastes, no one will leave hungry.
FLATBREADS at Santucci’s in Washington Township
Well-known for their square pies, this pizza maker also serves up some high-quality flatbreads. Our absolute favorite has to be the grilled chicken, mozzarella, pesto, candied walnuts and roasted tomatoes offering.
BAGELS at Sharky’s Bagels in Blackwood
The lines spilling out the door let you know you’re in the right place. The bagels have the perfect chew on the outside while making way for the doughy deliciousness inside. The breakfast sandwiches are can’t miss, but you can’t go wrong with a baker’s dozen and any one of the homemade cream cheeses either.
BRUNCH at Milkweed in Pitman
Brunch never tasted so good thanks to items like made-to-order French toast sticks, chicken parm pierogis, short rib and cheddar grits, or the blueberry and lemon ricotta pancakes. Reservations can be difficult to come by so plan ahead and save us a seat.
GOURMET PIZZA at Bricco Coal Fired Pizza in Cherry Hill and Westmont
Long before this spot started gaining national attention, we were singing its praises for the highly delectable pies that come out of the custom-made oven and arrive to the table slightly blistered with the taste of char and topped with an array of mouthwatering toppings.
PIES at Penza’s Pies at the Red Barn in Hammonton
One may expect the “blueberry capital of the world” to be home to some amazing blueberry pies, but at Penza’s there’s no shortage of addictive flavors to try. We’re talking apple crumb (yes, please!), mixed fruit, coconut custard and pineapple ricotta to name a few standouts.
CRAFT BEER BAR at Reunion Hall in Haddon Township
With 56 craft beers on tap, three different food concepts offering everything from stellar wings to vegan tacos to smash burgers, and both a sprawling interior and exterior space, this is the perfect place to linger during happy hour or any hour really.
CHEESESTEAKS at Cockadoodle Dans in Moorestown
One of our favorite places to grab wings also makes up some of the most dynamite cheesesteaks you’ll ever sink your teeth into. Hefty portions of well-seasoned sirloin or chicken are layered with cheese, bacon, fried onions, mushroom, long hots—you name it—before being slid into seeded Liscio loaves for you to devour.
MEDITERRANEAN at Bosporous Mediterranean Cuisine in Glassboro
Tucked in a non-descript strip mall along Delsea Drive near Rowan’s campus is where you’ll find this hidden gem. Everything from the stuffed grape leaves and zucchini pancakes to the lamb mixed grill and Turkish pizza are well prepared and bursting with flavor.
CREAM PUFFS at Napoleon’s Cremepuffery in Lindenwold
Crowds have long flocked to Napoleon’s where owner Charlene Napoleon and her team welcome visitors while large, fresh airy pockets of pastry are piped full of your choice of vanilla, chocolate, pistachio and other rotating flavors before being coated in powdered sugar for good measure.
LUNCH at Phil’s Deli in Cherry Hill
The lunch crowd at Phil’s ranges from blue collar workers to the suit-and-tie crowd, who all frequent the Route 70 mainstay for its magnificent variety of selections. You’ll find usual suspects like salads, wraps, steaks and hoagies, but the specialty items are where Phil’s really shines and shows its culinary creativity.
EMPANADAS at Amigos in Wenonah
There’s just something about that first bite of these empanadas that leave us buzzing. The pillowed dough exterior with a golden brown color provides just enough of a slight crunch before the filling overtakes your taste buds. The beef is divine, but we’re also partial to the spinach and cheese as well as the chicken fajita.
SOUP at The Soup Bar in Palmyra
Some people wake up and play Wordle, others head straight to The Soup Bar’s website to check out the daily menu. No matter what is being ladled out of the pots that day, you’ll find great joy in this elevated comfort food. Think silky, smooth lobster bisque, hearty chicken noodle or cream of wild mushroom.
PANINIS at Brooklyn Original Pizzeria in Haddon Heights
Owner Filippo Sparacio pours his heart into everything that comes out of his kitchen and that certainly includes these sizable sandwiches. With a dozen varieties, it may be hard to narrow down your choice, but we humbly suggest the chicken cutlet with fresh mozzarella and homemade vodka sauce.
SPECIALTY SANDWICHES at Boaggio’s Bread in Mount Laurel
This artisan wholesale bakery and Italian market recently moved to a new location, but customers can expect the same family vibe and a menu that never disappoints. The specialty sandwiches might have amusing names like The Yo Cuz and Screamin Eagle Sammie, but the creative concoctions are certainly no joke.
EGG SANDWICHES at The Chicken or the Egg in Marlton
Affectionately known as The Chegg, this popular spot founded in Long Beach Island in 1991 added a second location in Marlton in 2023. Its unique egg sandwiches—including the Porkwich, featuring four different meats, and the Philly Eggs Benedict, combining a cheesesteak with poached eggs—are available any time of day.
PIZZA BY THE SLICE at Pizza Luigi Fresca in Marlton
Whether you’re craving a traditional pepperoni slice or something off the beaten path like a piece of bruschetta Sicilian or calzone pizza, there is plenty to choose from at Luigi’s, and the familiar faces behind the counter are always quick with a recommendation if you need some guidance.
COOKIES at Downtown Cookies in Haddonfield
Owner Morgan Falasca grew up loving her mother’s desserts, especially her cookies, and soon the passion for baking was passed down. She left a corporate job to open her own bakery in late 2020 and has never looked back, as her oversized homemade cookies have been a hit both locally and across the country. (856) 281-9548, DowntownCookies.com
BAKERY at Sunflour Bakeshop in Mount Laurel
Everything is made 100% from scratch and specialties range from custom cakes for weddings and birthdays to scones, cookies, cake pops (minus the stick) and more, including allergy-friendly treats. Having trouble deciding? Try our go-to, which is Sunflour’s version of the brookie—half cookie, half brownie.
HOAGIES at Pal Joey’s Deli in Mantua
Hoagies from this renowned Italian deli that has been delighting Gloucester County patrons for decades are perfect during any time of year, but especially for summer events like a day at the beach or tailgating before a concert. The menu includes traditional favorites like the Italian, diablo varieties with an extra kick and the famous roast pork.
WINGS at Dominic’s Tavern in Bellmawr
Debates over the best wings in South Jersey can get intense—even among family members—but those who have tried Dominic’s are usually in agreement. Their jumbo versions of the bar classic come slathered in a variety of sauces, with the most popular undoubtedly being the signature Fat Daddy.
DOUGHNUTS at Mama Buntz’s Donut Company in Washington Township
Sure, you can settle for a standard dozen from the boring chain down the street, or you can opt for a niner from this creative, family-owned shop where vanilla cake doughnuts are made to order with a rotating selection of flavors and toppings, some of which you never would have guessed would pair perfectly on a doughnut.
ICE CREAM at Brain Freeze Ice Cream Parlor in Moorestown
With 34 flavors of hard ice cream and yogurt, soft serve and water ice, there are plenty of options for any ice cream enthusiast. On these hot summer nights, cool off and enjoy a delicious ice cream cone, brownie sundae, milkshake and more.

BREWERY at Farm Truck Brewing in Medford
This nano brewery nestled in Historic Medford quickly earned a reputation for friendly service, a wide and ever-changing selection of locally sourced beers and a warmly welcoming environment. Its live entertainment also makes it a great spot for hot tunes and cold brews. (609) 451-5481, FarmTruckBrewing.com
NACHOS at The Jug Handle Inn in Cinnaminson

HOT DOGS at The Shack in Mount Laurel
A visit to Rancocas Woods isn’t complete without a nosh, and these specialty dogs are among the shops’ shining gustatory gems. The BBQ brisket dog is among our favorites, and the chili dog is an irresistible take on a classic combo.
GELATO at Gelato Dolceria in Haddonfield
Gelato Dolceria is a step above regular ice cream, with a rotating, delightful menu consisting of both gelato and sorbet. The rich, sweet and savory flavors are complemented by pieces of fruit, chocolate, cookies and more. Try the classic Cioccolate Fondente or be daring and try the parmesan gelato.

The specialty cakes, cupcakes, pound cakes, cheesecakes and butter cakes at Sweetsboro are sure to be the highlight of a special occasion or just as a little treat on a regular day. We recommend the chocolate strawberry banana mousse, a three-layer chocolate cake with fresh fruit, chocolate ganache and chocolate whipped cream. (856) 241-7722, SweetsboroBakery.com

Be sure to try the garden beauty salad topped with avocados and feta cheese.

Osushi’s menu is so vast that it provides numerous options for those who love fish with unique pairings like the kani apple roll, as well as plenty of options for those who stay away from the sea—beyond the standard (but still delicious) cucumber avocado roll.
