Tell us your favorite client story. A guy comes in for a divorce after two years of marriage. I ask if there are any children, he says nine: seven before the marriage and two since. The couple had been together for a total of 11 years. I asked, “Why the divorce?” He says, “She’s crazy.” I asked him if it took the whole 11 years and nine kids to figure that out, or if a couple years and a couple kids would have been sufficient.
What in your opinion has been the most impactful legal decision in recent U.S. history?
Not a decision, but the change in our culture. When I was growing up, all the lawyers on TV were defense counsel. Now they are prosecutors. Since 9-11, we have lived in fear. The result is almost a presumption of guilt rather than innocence. Now, with every trial I have to start with a reminder to the jury of what made our country great.
Eagles, Flyers, Phillies or Sixers?
Eagles. Law and life are more like football.
Fill in the blank. The best part of my job is ________.
Making our freedoms live. In life nothing is promised—except a defense attorney, in the Sixth Amendment.

What drove you to become a lawyer?
I didn’t decide to attend law school until I had been out of college for two years. I realized that, while I loved my job, I had an interest in the law stemming from one of my college degree requirements that never entirely went away. I decided to pursue the interest and see where it led. I did not start out wanting to do family law, but after taking a course in my last year I was hooked.
What’s your favorite lawyer joke?
Hard to say. I heard one today that asked, “Why does California have the most lawyers and New Jersey have the most toxic waste sites? Because New Jersey got to pick first.”
Fill in the blank. The best part of my job is ________.
Helping people transition through a difficult time in their lives. Sometimes the client really doesn’t believe they can make it on their own. When I can help someone realize that they are able to stand on their own, it makes the long hours and stress worthwhile.
What’s surprising music is on your iPod?
I have a fairly diverse collection of music that runs from Meat Loaf to Guns ‘n’ Roses and Pink, to Eminem. I am not sure what on the list would be least expected; it would probably depend on who was asking.

Spending time with my family and friends. The fun we have together helps me keep the stress of my job in perspective.
Where’s the best place in South Jersey for a power lunch?

Tell us your favorite client story.
I prepared a client on a Friday for trial on Monday. I told the client to dress appropriately for court. The client said, “No problem.” The client arrived in court on Monday in a brown tuxedo that he wore to his high school prom 20 years earlier. He looked like Jim Carrey in the movie Dumb and Dumber. We had to come back to court the next day to pick the jury. The client arrived in a Hawaiian luau shirt. I settled the case before the defense attorney or the jury saw my client. I learned to be more specific in advising my clients about appropriate attire.

What drove you to become a lawyer?
During my sophomore year in college at Brandeis University, I was walking to my car in downtown Boston late one evening when a highly distressed young woman ran up to me, pointed to a man in the distance, and told me that she had just been raped by that man. With the benefit of some good luck, I was able to apprehend the man until police arrived. When I testified for the prosecution months later, that was my very first experience with lawyers. I was impressed by the intellectual fortitude required to obtain the conviction in that criminal case. Later that year, I was called as a witness in a civil case in Boston, when college classmates sued each other over how to split a sports car they won in a radio station contest. My role as a witness in these two cases led me to consider a career as a trial lawyer, asking the questions, instead of answering them.
Tell us your favorite client/case story.
During a two-week optometric malpractice trial in Burlington County in 2007, defense counsel began to unfairly cross-examine my client with medical records [that hadn’t been provided to me in advance of the trial, which is against the rules]. I objected. [But after glancing at the records, I withdrew my objection], much to everyone’s surprise. When defense counsel finished his cross-examination, I began my redirect examination, in which I quickly established that the medical records were not those of my client but rather of a different patient with the same name. Defense counsel never checked the birth date in those records.… The defendant’s insurance company had offered nothing to settle the case. The jury deliberated for an hour and its award, including interest, totaled $2.7 million, the highest verdict of its kind nationwide.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you have found yourself in?
My undergraduate degree is in contemporary analytic philosophy. Needless to say, if I had never pursued a law degree, I’d be unemployed—but at least I would know why.
SETH N. BRODER

Expertise: Education Law
Years Practicing: 14
Law School: Ohio Northern University Law School
What drove you to become a lawyer?
My father told me I would always have a job.
Tell us your favorite client story.
My first motion I ever argued was in a special education case. I won the motion, which essentially ended the case in favor of my client. After the judge finished reading his ruling, I looked at my client who was standing next to me and she was crying. She looked at me and said, “You have no idea how much you helped my family.” I will never forget that!
Who’s your favorite fictional lawyer?
Paul Newman as Frank Galvin in The Verdict. I liked how real of a character he was and how he prevailed against a much stronger opponent.
Eagles, Flyers, Phillies or Sixers?
All of the above. I am a homer!
What is your favorite way to unwind from the stress of your work?
[Playing] Sunday morning hockey.
DREW A. MOLOTSKY
Becker Meisel, LLC, Cherry Hill
Expertise: Family Law
Years Practicing: 17
Law School: Widener University School of Law
What drove you to become a lawyer?
I think it was the combination of intellectual challenge, the theatrical elements of the courtroom, and the wide range of possible careers that drew me to the law.
Tell us your favorite client story.
A few years back I was able to win a custody trial wherein I reunited a father with the 7-year-old daughter that had been kept from him. I will never forget the sense of joy and relief in both of them when the decision was read. It was possibly the most rewarding moment of my career.
What in your opinion has been the most impactful legal decision in recent U.S. history?
Looking to the past and focusing on New Jersey family law, I would have to say Lepis vs. Lepis (2001). That case set the standard for modification of support payments (child support and alimony) and has become particularly important with the recent economic downturn and rampant job losses. Looking forward, I would have to say the recent N.J. Supreme Court decision in Lewis vs. Harris, which deals with the issue of same-sex marriage. I believe this will be one of the key issues in family law in the coming years (if not already).
What’s your favorite lawyer joke?
A 42-year-old lawyer standing at the pearly gates questioned why he had been taken so young. He was assured there was no mistake, as based on his billing records he had to be at least 104 years old.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be?
I would probably be working in the theater. I have a great love of the arts, particularly the stage, and I have spent a lot of time directing and producing shows in various non-professional venues in South Jersey.
Eagles, Flyers, Phillies or Sixers?
Right now it’s impossible not to say Phillies first. That said, I go to many Eagles and Flyers games with my dad, and that has its own rewards.
What surprising music is on your iPod?
Pink Floyd. When my older brother drove me to school as a high school freshman he forced me to listen every morning. I guess it stuck.
Where’s the best place in South Jersey for a power lunch?
Having been born and raised in Cherry Hill, there’s no place better than Ponzio’s.
AMY C. GOLDSTEIN
Adinolfi & Goldstein, P.A., Haddonfield
Expertise: Family Law
Years Practicing: 28
Law School: University of Pennsylvania
What drove you to become a lawyer?
During college, I developed an interest in child advocacy, which naturally led me to the idea of attending law school.
What in your opinion has been the most impactful legal decision in recent U.S. history?
Brown vs. Board of Education.
Who’s your favorite fictional lawyer?
Although the most obvious choice should be Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, I’m going to go with Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife. She has integrity, she’s smart, she protects her clients and she has great outfits.
Eagles, Flyers, Phillies or Sixers?
Phillies.
Fill in the blank. The best part of my job is ________.
Watching the transformation in my clients from the time they first meet with me to when the case ends. When they first come in, my clients are usually pretty upset or angry. By the end of the case, they are different people, and I enjoy knowing that I’ve helped them through a very difficult time.
What surprising music is on your iPod?
Opera.
What is your favorite way to unwind from the stress of your work?
A glass of red wine and a good book.
Where’s the best South Jersey place for a power lunch?
I wouldn’t know. I eat lunch at my desk.
What’s your favorite thing about South Jersey?
The shore.
What’s your favorite lawyer joke?
None. They’re usually insulting to a great profession.
NICOLA SUGLIA
Fleischer, Fleischer & Suglia, Voorhees
Expertise: Business Litigation Law
Years Practicing: 13
Law School: Rutgers University School of Law-Camden
What drove you to become a lawyer?
I was initially drawn to the profession by the versatility that a law degree offers. No matter what your interests are or where you want your path in life to lead, a law degree can be a vehicle by which to get there. I also enjoy people coming to me for advice and counsel. Even if someone comes to me with a problem in an area I do not handle, I do my best to refer that person to a colleague who might be able to help.
Tell us your favorite client story.
I once represented a shoe salesman who was owed commissions by a wholesaler. There was not a great deal of money at issue, but my client was frustrated because he had been getting undercut by the wholesaler for years. He was resigned to the fact that he would not likely recover much, but he would be happy with getting at least a few dollars back…. We went to trial and were awarded a judgment for the entire amount we were seeking. The client’s reaction and appreciation made me feel like I had just won the biggest case in the world.
What’s your favorite lawyer joke?
Why don’t sharks attack lawyers? Professional courtesy.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be?
Definitely a restaurateur. My family owns and operates Nick & Joe’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Haddon Township. I grew up in the business and to this day I enjoy jumping behind the counter from time to time to flip some pizzas. It’s almost therapeutic!
Who’s your favorite fictional lawyer?
I like Matt Damon’s character in The Rainmaker because I always love an underdog, but I also like Al Pacino’s character in The Devil’s Advocate. Despite the fact that his character is evil, his timing and delivery in certain scenes make him somewhat funny at the same time.

I once heard a litigant who was required to take a paternity test demand that his girlfriend take a “maternity test.”
What in your opinion has been the most impactful legal decision in recent U.S. history?
Regardless of your beliefs and point of view, it has to be Roe vs. Wade.

Marine biology.
Eagles, Flyers, Phillies or Sixers?
Phillies of course!
Fill in the blank. The best part of my job is ________.
The great people I work with!
