School House Rock, Live!
Fans of the animated School House Rock series are in for a treat when Camden County College presents a live performance of the educational cartoons sure to delight all ages. The show follows Tom, a new teacher nervous about his first day of school, as he sits down to watch TV. Soon, the animated characters come to life and show Tom how to teach students with fun songs such as “Just a Bill,” and “Conjunction Junction.” July 17-18, times vary at the Dennis Flyer Theatre, 200 College Drive, Blackwood, (856) 302-6485, Mainstage.org, $9-$10
Family fun at the farm fair
Vendors, animal shows, rides and other carnival-style attractions complete this year’s family-friendly Burlington County Farm Fair. Unique competitions include a Scarecrow Contest where participants build a scarecrow using only recyclable materials and the Kiss a Pig contest where attendees drop donations in the jar of a contestant they wish to see kiss a pig. The Farm Fair Queen Pageant highlights the event, so be sure to be there opening night when the queen is crowned in the North Show Tent. Free live string music
The Quaker City String Band will entertain audiences July 24 with their rambunctious music and colorful costumes during Collingswood’s free Summer Mummers concert series. The event is BYOC — bring your own chair — and sponsors will offer food and shopping specials in the Powell Lane Plaza to enjoy before the performance. XPoNential-ly great folk tunes
The Susquehanna Bank Center will be filled with folk rock tunes when the Lumineers take to its stage this July. The Denver-based band will perform songs off their self-titled debut album as part of the 2013 XPoNential Music Festival line-up, a three-day event that also includes performances by Bob Dylan, Dr. Dog, and many others. Worth the Drive--A “Wicked” good time in Oz
Travel to the Emerald City with “Wicked” at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. The “Wizard of Oz” prequel follows Elphaba, the green-skinned girl who will become the Wicked Witch of the West, and her surprising friendship with Glinda. Witness Elphaba’s fight against Oz’s corrupt government in the song-filled adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel that will surely make audiences change their minds about the wicked character.
