With career concentrations in 18 programs—from computer science and engineering to cosmetology and culinary arts—Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT) offers opportunities to earn college credits along with internships and apprenticeships, ensuring that students will be ready for whatever step comes next.
Founded in 1971 and opened as a full-time school in 1986, GCIT draws from 19 school districts in Gloucester County. In addition to the long-term advantages of preparing students to head off to college or enter the workforce, kids also receive the full high school experience, from competitive sports to proms and activities.
It all takes place on a scenic campus adjacent to Rowan College of South Jersey that includes five computer labs, nine science labs, an Olympic Aquatics Center, two gymnasiums, a fitness center, a theater, three commercial kitchens, a bakery kitchen, two dance studios, and a television studio/media center.
The following are some frequently asked questions about the school and how interested families can start the process of enrollment.
What is unique about GCIT?
GCIT is a full-time comprehensive high school for Gloucester County students offering a focus in a career pathway. An education at GCIT offers students the opportunity to learn in an environment that gives them a head start to a career and/or to being college ready. There are 18 career-themed programs from which students can choose. Interested eighth grade students need to submit an application and, if accepted, will embark on an incredible journey of learning.
What is involved in the application process?
The process is easy. The deadline for students to apply to the school is Jan. 1, 2025, and should be done online. GCIT’s admissions department will process the application and obtain all the required criteria, which are listed on the website. Students are scored based on grades and standardized testing. Transportation of all accepted students is available through their respective local school districts.
What else makes GCIT exciting for students who attend?
Students can become part of the GCIT community in many ways. Opportunities to thrive exist through the school’s sports programs. Students can attend dances, join clubs, take trips and more. GCIT is proud to say that its students get a well-rounded experience. Many students participate in the Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) at state and national levels, as well as the chance for community outreach through events and happenings.
How can an eighth grade student learn about GCIT?
The best way to learn about the programs offered by GCIT is to visit the website at GCIT.org and explore the course work and rigor of each of the programs. Each program will give a student the opportunity to earn certifications, licenses and/or college credits, which are based on the needs of the field of study.
How does GCIT help prepare students for their future after high school?
Career and Technical Education allows students to begin a pathway to their desired career by integrating specific certifications or licenses needed in their career field. With many of the articulation agreements with colleges and universities, the students can build transcripts and resumes for their future after GCIT. Through the articulation agreement with Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ), students can take dual credits and earn them while taking courses during their school day. They can then move to the collegiate high school to continue to take classes, and some even earn their associate’s degree before they graduate high school. Seniors also work to take part in the School to Work program, where they can sign out and do internships or supervised workplace employment opportunities.
