On what led him to become a pediatrician…
I went into pediatrics because I knew there were sick kids. [In my field], I’m more about keeping kids healthy than only helping them when they’re sick, so my favorite part is seeing them get better.
On challenging aspects of the profession…
The most challenging and frustrating part is when kids aren’t improving and it forces us to delve deeper and find out more about the patient.
On his most memorable patient…
One of my favorite patients was a boy who had a piece of tape in his lungs for a year. He had a roll of tape on the end of a pen and he inhaled it when he was 10 years old. He had been diagnosed with asthma for over a year and it just didn’t make sense. So, we pursued it more and looked in his lungs and found the tape, removed it and he’s totally fine with no symptoms.
On his favorite place to get a bite in South Jersey…
I like the Pub [in Pennsauken]. My friends and I have a steak night at The Pub every once in a while.
Dr. Maria Mascarenhas
Pediatric Nutrition
On the rewards of working with children…
It’s a silly answer, but I just like doing it. I like kids and I want to help people, so it was a natural fit. Plus the science stimulates me.
On challenging aspects of the profession…
It’s nice to develop long-term relationships, but the part that is hard is when you need to graduate the kids. It’s like, the kids may be ready, but the parents aren’t ready to let go of you. But, there comes a point when they are entering adult medicine and you know less about adult problems, so you have to let go.
On her favorite place to get a bite in South Jersey…
I don’t go out very much, but when I do, Penang is my favorite.
Dr. Mark Mintz
Pediatric Neurology
On the rewards of working with children…
It’s more of a lifestyle than it is a job. I’m a child neurologist, so I am often dealing with a segment of the population that is underserved from a healthcare system standpoint. Being able to provide that continuity of care is an emotional and professional reward.
On creating bonds with their patients…
At this point of my career, the ability to have treated very young children as infants and now see them flourish as very successful adolescents and young adults. That is very fulfilling and sort of makes it all worthwhile. There are other cases that may not have a successful outcome, but you are still able to provide care and support to the family and that’s one of the keys of pediatrics—you are not only treating children, but in essence you are treating the families.
On his favorite place to get a bite in South Jersey…
I favor anything ethnic. If I go out, I like to sample different ethnic foods.
Dr. John B. Tedeschi

On the rewards of working with children…
The obvious answer is that you get to work with children. But I think the part that is so satisfying is that you get to change that life; you get to help guide it. You impact their livelihood not only as a kid, but as an adult.
On the challenging aspects of the profession…
Helping parents understand an illness a child may have [is difficult], because everyone is so worried about the health of their child. One of the most challenging things is just helping the parents calm down, take a step back and relax.
On working alongside his father…
One of the best things about being a pediatrician is you work with that family from the time they are born until they’re 20 or 22 years old. And now, because I am working in the practice my father started, I am two and three generations deep, so that’s a shared bond that we have that is really unique. Very few people can say, ‘Your father took care of my grandmother.’
On his favorite place to get a bite in South Jersey…
I’m a steakhouse kind of guy, and there’s a lot to choose from.
Dr. April Douglass-Bright
General Pediatrics
On the rewards of working with children…
It’s a wonderful feeling to be a part of a family’s life. You want them to succeed, and be healthy and prosperous, just like they were your own children.
On the future of pediatric medicine…
Medicine in general is exciting. There are always new innovations … [we’re] discovering new things every day. You are always learning.
On her favorite place to get a bite in South Jersey…
The Victor Pub—we call it The Vic [in Camden]—is a great hangout spot for the people that work at Cooper. When we need a break, or if we are celebrating an occasion, we always pop over there.
Dr. Florence Rosen
General Pediatrics
On the rewards of working with children…
My greatest pleasure is seeing kids grow up, I love seeing them from when they are babies until they graduate college. And I find it gratifying to take a really frightened child and have them leave smiling. And the most rewarding is when a kid is screaming when they leave my office—screaming because they don’t want to leave.
On what pediatricians provide parents…
I think the pediatrician is much more than a doctor, I think we are an incredible resource for parents to help with all aspects of child-raising. [In] getting to know a patient and family well enough that I can really help with developmental issues.… I don’t think it’s just medicine; it’s the whole package.
On her favorite place to get a bite in South Jersey…
I love going to different restaurants and trying new things.
