Action News anchor and reporter Sarah Bloomquist reflects on her Ohio upbringing, tells us why she once ziplined over a frozen Mississippi River, and shares why she feels such a strong connection to her viewers.
I grew up in Toledo, Ohio as the eldest of four kids—two boys and two girls. We spent our days riding bikes, jumping on a neighbor’s trampoline, and ziplining between two trees in our backyard.
My grandparents owned a restaurant in a Hungarian neighborhood in Toledo. It was called Monoky’s Cafe. My grandfather, John, ran the bar, and my grandmother, Wanda, made the food.
I grew up playing competitive junior tennis along with my siblings.
Diane Sawyer and I had the same high school English teacher. Alice Lora taught her years before me when she lived in Kentucky. Mrs. Lora encouraged me to pursue journalism like Diane. I was the co-editor of my high school newspaper and wrote for the paper while attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
I like to cook, but I rarely repeat a recipe! Part of the fun for me is looking for and trying out new dishes.
My job at 6ABC has offered me opportunities that have taken me around the world to cover historic events and amazing places. On behalf of the network, I’ve traveled to Kenya, Egypt and Italy.
I think one of the craziest things I’ve ever done for a story was ziplining across the frozen Mississippi when I was in Minneapolis to cover the Eagles in the Super Bowl. It was terrifying, but also very exhilarating. I would do it again! Maybe the next time the Eagles go to the Super Bowl.
I studied French in college and I love the language. I have been lucky enough to travel to Paris many times.
I studied abroad in college and lived in Luxembourg. Every weekend, my friends and I would take the train somewhere new. I think it fueled my sense of adventure and love of traveling the world.
I like to think I have a green thumb. I have a bunch of fiddle leaf fig trees, and I’ve figured out how to use the branches I’ve cut to grow entire new trees.
I wish I knew how to knit; I think it would be good for me. I could use a few more relaxing hobbies.
I love working at a station that is such a big part of this community. I don’t think there is any other station quite like Action News where the viewers feel we are a part of their families, and we feel the same about them.
