It’s September and with the fall season inching ever closer it can only mean one thing for many in the South Jersey area: the return of Eagles football. While football is certainly a year-round passion for fans, there’s something about the crispness of autumn that makes everything feel in its right place. That’s why we are so excited to have new running back DeMarco Murray gracing our cover this month.
After an offseason where the team traded away their star running back LeSean McCoy, saw West Deptford resident Jeremy Maclin leave in free agency and head coach Chip Kelly be accused of everything from being racist to hiding his personal life—why do people care that he was once married? It’s not like his ex-wife is going to spill his sports science secrets to the rest of the teams in the league—it’s nice to finally get back to really what matters.
This year, Murray is a big part of what matters. The former Dallas Cowboy is now wearing midnight green and is a key cog in what promises to be an exciting team when the games start to count later this month. And as cliché as it sounds, as good as he is on the field, he’s an even better person. Humble, charitable, intelligent, focused on family and not driven by ego or money. You may have loathed him when he played for the Cowboys, but we have a feeling after reading the story on page 46, you’ll be rooting extra hard for him this year.
Also in this packed issue we take a look at South Jersey’s public high schools in our annual report card to see how they measure up in several key statistics like SAT scores and graduation rates. You’ll also find readers’ choices for the Best of Home and Garden, as well as interviews with famed actor Jeff Daniels and comedian Nick Kroll.
