Caring for your children is a paramount concern of any parent, and finding a physician you can trust can be stressful. That’s why for the first time ever, South Jersey Magazine has conducted a peer-to-peer survey of area children’s physicians to find out who they feel are the leaders in the profession.
In addition, our readers went to SouthJersey.com to cast their ballots for the doctors who have excelled in caring for their kids, and thus are worthy of the recognition they receive here. We’ve also spoken to a few of the docs to find out what inspired them to pursue the career. Not surprisingly, their answers all carry a common theme: the desire to improve the quality of life for sick children. Consider this the best physician referral any parent could ask for.
DR. KRISTIN HYMAN
General Pediatrics
“I had a wonderful pediatrician growing up, and knew from a young age that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I love being able to see kids every step of the way, from the newborn visit until that last checkup before college. It is an incredible honor to be a part of so many children’s lives and help guide their parents as they raise them to be healthy and happy.”
DR. T. ERNESTO FIGUEROA
Pediatric Surgery
“As a urology resident, I was exposed to the field of pediatric urology by two of the most capable and compassionate physicians that I have known in my career. Through them, I learned about the great challenges of taking care of children, and at the same time, the tremendous satisfaction to see the children heal and recover from illness and disease.”
DR. JOHN T. DELGIORNO
General Pediatrics
“People often ask why I like pediatrics. The stock answer is that the patients are so cute and funny at times. But for me, I like parents and helping them to take care of their precious bundle of joy. It is a great feeling of confidence when they select my practice to look after their most prized possession. I know how important it is to help parents and their children through difficult times. It is well worth it to me, no matter how difficult it may be.”
DR. LEE LERCH
General Pediatrics
“I was very sports minded and athletic as a youth, which spurred an interest of the human body and how it functioned, which is how I became interested in medicine. Also, my father was a pediatrician and my mother was a pediatric nurse.
I find the rewarding part of the profession to be watching families grow. There is nothing better than when one of my patients, who is now grown, comes back to me bringing their own babies in. Plus—I just love playing with the kids and interacting with them.”
DR. CAITLIN PAPASTAMELOS
Pediatric Pulmonology
“I know that it sounds corny, but, I always wanted to make a positive difference in this world. I always loved the intellectual challenges of science, I love working with people, so medicine was the natural course. I ended up being drawn to pulmonology because, for me, helping a child to breathe and function better just never gets old. This is the best job.”
DR. LEONARD F. KAPLAN
General Pediatrics
“I always had a passion for medicine and have enjoyed taking care of the most important possession of any adult—their children. The most rewarding aspect of my profession is that I can take care of a patient hours after they are born and continue to follow them closely until they graduate college while maintaining a very strong relationship with both the child and their parents.”
DR. SCOTT R. SCHAFFER
Pediatric Otolaryngology
“I love explaining ear, nose and throat problems to children in a way they can understand and accept. This involves personalized drawings, which allay parent fears at the same time. I find that children are often more mature about their medical issues than adults imagine.”
DR. JOHN B. TEDESCHI
General Pediatrics
“My father is a pediatrician and that obviously was, and still is, a significant inspiration to me. My true inspiration is the children themselves. I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding job. It is always a pleasure and an honor to become part of child’s life and a member of their family.
To be able to positively impact the life of a young person is a privilege that I take very seriously (as we all should). One of the most rewarding aspects of being a pediatrician is watching the children grow into responsible adults and valuable members of society. The most fun is watching our babies have babies of their own. That’s a beautiful thing!”
DR. COYLE CONNOLLY
Pediatric Dermatology
“One of the reasons I was drawn to dermatology was the ability to treat all ages with varied skin conditions ranging from simple rashes to life-threatening skin cancer. Working closely with young people affords me the opportunity to help them during a transitional time in their lives. Childhood and adolescence is challenging enough without the added burden of acne, warts, eczema or even skin cancer. There is no greater reward than seeing the smile of a teen who previously endured the stigma of their untreated skin condition. It is my job to provide them with the basic knowledge and latest treatment options to achieve the healthiest skin possible.”
DR. HAROLD MARKS
Pediatric Neurology
“When I entered medical school, I became interested in the neurosciences. I felt this was the most challenging medical field. In my junior year, I did a pediatric rotation and loved working with children. At that time, I decided to become a pediatric neurologist.”
