SJM_SouthernExposure_0220_FINAL_SouthernExposure_11_08 1 / 30 / 20 9 : 17 AM Page 3 SouthernExposure PEOPLE Lenape High School seniors Sidharth Peri ( right ) and Ajit Sing ( left ) are two 17 - year - olds who wanted to give back to their community by creating the non - profit Strive for Supplies . Through dona - tions and fundraisers they are able to help the younger generation gain access to all the tools necessary for scholastic success . “ We saw how we , along with many of our friends , had all of these school supplies lying around our house , going unused and thought about how there are lots of less fortunate students who could put these supplies to much better use , ” says Sing . “ We sought out to find a way to get all of these supplies into the hands of students in need . Our aim was , by providing students with these tools , like pencils , notebooks , binders , headphones , etc . , we could help improve educational standards in our area . ” Both Peri and Sing share a strong passion for mathematics and wanted to focus on helping students in their math classes . This idea made them create the South Jersey Youth Math League , geared toward students in third to eighth grade , to help raise money . “ We base our donations on what the school says their needs are . Our school principal , Mr . Cattani , helped us a lot with getting in touch with the elementary schools in our area who sent us lists of supplies which they had a stronger need for , ” says Peri . “ These included binders , notebooks , pencils / pens / markers , headphones — supplies which could be used for all classes so we focused on getting those . ” Through the math league , they run various contests and host instructional classes in local libraries . Every cent of the money they raise goes back into the program which allows them to purchase more supplies . Sing and Peri are eager to expand their business by introducing the cause in different venues around New Jersey . They want to take on more volunteers and to donate to larger organizations that help underprivileged students .
