Seriously Stuffed

by Editorial Staff--South Jersey Magazine
We have to admit, some of our favorite foods are ones that are filled with hidden ingredients. And we’re not just talking cheese-filled ravioli; we prefer something a little more sophisticated than that. This month, we set out to find five menu items that are more than meets the eye. Each offering below may seem simple in nature, but instead cloaks a rewarding treasure inside that is well worth the hunt.

Blue Monkey Tavern : Stuffed Roasted Peppers (pictured)
This place is well-known for their expansive craft beer list, but they should also be known for these peppers stuffed with mozzarella and prosciutto that are baked in the oven and finished with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
2 S. Centre St., Merchantville

Slice: Truffled Ribeye Stromboli
This Philadelphia transplant combines the tender meat with caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese and a fragrant white truffle oil to appeal to all your gourmand senses.
137 Egg Harbor Road, Washington Township
(856) 302-5099

Little Louie’s BBQ: 20 Hour Brisket Empanada
Any barbecue fan will tell you the secret to success is cooking low and slow, and that’s why we love this black bean and brisket pocket full of flavor where the meat’s been cooked for so long, it melts away like a breath strip.
505 Haddon Ave., Collingswood
(856) 854-0600

Severino Pasta: Tortelloni
Here they do pasta all kinds of ways, from traditional to modern, but we love the pear and gorgonzola tortelloni wrapped in a red wine dough.
110 Haddon Ave., Westmont
(856) 854-7666

Bobby Chez : Fried Macaroni and Cheese Balls
It may not be the healthiest option, but these breaded baseball-sized orbs are cheesy, gooey and a satisfying alternative to the crab cakes here.
Route 38 and Marter Ave., Mount Laurel
(other locations in Cherry Hill, Collingswood and Washington Township)
