Shore Glad to See You

by Peter Proko--Editor-in-Chief

Memorial Day may be the unofficial start of summer, but we like to think the season doesn’t really kick off until you are holding our annual Best of the Shore issue in hand, toes dusted in sand and your beverage of choice at the ready. If last year was about rebounding from Hurricane Sandy’s destructive path, this summer is all about moving on from Old Man Winter and saying hello to some sunshine.

For this year’s issue, we cruised from Long Beach Island to Cape May in search of the best restaurants, retail shops, entertainment and other activities for an insider’s look at why the Jersey Shore is our favorite summer playground. Turn to Page 64 for a town-by-town roundup of our top picks, as well as information on what’s new in each town. You’ll also find our readers’ choices for the best beaches, ice cream, pizza, fudge, water parks and much more.

There’s a reason why everywhere else people say they are going to the beach, and around these parts we say we are going “Down the Shore.” Because the Jersey Shore isn’t just a place for us to drop a towel and dip our feet in the water; it’s an experience. From the way a child’s face beams in the nighttime glow of the Boardwalk to the fresh seafood being served up at one of the many restaurants, it is a place that is magical to both young and old alike. Want a cocktail while you watch the sunset? No problem. Want to eat dinner prepared by a chef nominated for a James Beard Award? You got it. Want to soak up some rays while catching the Phillies game on the radio? Just don’t forget the sunscreen. Want to duck and dodge the beach tag crew? We won’t say anything. Want to make memories that will last a lifetime? You’re well on your way.

Kind regards,
Peter J. Proko
