All Smiles

by Editorial Staff--South Jersey Magazine
Our area is full of top notch dental professionals willing to go the extra mile to make sure their patients are smiling wide, which is why we turned to our readers and asked them to vote for their favorites in several specialties. The response was overwhelming and the result is our 2012 list of the Top Dentists in South Jersey; 83 of the most trusted specialists in their field. We also visited the offices of nine of the honorees to get a behind-the- scenes look at the doctors known for their skill, their compassion and, most of all, their dedication.

DR. KEVIN ATLEE
Cosmetic Dentistry

How many years have you been practicing?
10 years

What is your favorite way to unwind?
Working out at Crossfit Off the Grid and fishing with my triplet sons.

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
By assuring them that I will treat them the same way I treat my family.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
When patients come in as desperate, terrified strangers and leave as happy, at ease friends.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
We’ve invested in 3-D imaging that allows us to plan guided implant surgery from start to finish, eliminating guesswork and decreasing post-op discomfort.

DR. AMY JAMES
Orthodontics

How many years have you been practicing?
13 years

What is your favorite way to unwind?
Traveling- I love to look forward to exploring new cultures as a break from my routine. For a more immediate decompression, I’m crazy about going to the movies.

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
Being a good listener. I will never be too busy to listen to your concerns and will always thoughtfully answer your questions so that you feel comfortable, and trusting of our relationship.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
Besides the obvious “creating beautiful healthy smiles that make people feel good about themselves”; I feel tremendous gratification when I am asked to teach. Whether it’s teaching my residents in the orthodontic department at Temple, or the general dental residents as UMDNJ, or the international orthodontists at the Tweed Research Foundation, or the middle school students on Career Day, its through teaching that we learn twice.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
That it is ever changing and improving. There is nothing stagnant about orthodontics and that allows us to continually learn. Our materials get better every year. Our systems are always being revamped and made more efficient. Fortunately, orthodontics is accessible by everyone, and almost everyone can benefit in some way from treatment.

Any memorable patient stories you can share?
I traveled to China three years ago with an Orthodontic Delegation of People to People for a professional exchange. Our translator and guide for the two weeks we were there decided she wanted treatment after learning about her needs and options from 25 different practitioners on the trip. She started a very complicated treatment plan that included corrective jaw surgery in Beijing. Before she completed her treatment she was accepted (having never been to the U.S. before) to George Washington University in DC for and MBA. She sought me out to complete her treatment as she commuted from DC to our office in Haddonfield for appointments. She is finished with her treatment just recently and will be graduating with honors. When she sent her post treatment records back to China, her previous orthodontist, who is the Chairman of the department at the Peking University and President of the Chinese Orthodontic Society, complimented our work. It was a proud moment to have my skills reviewed by such an international authority. Most importantly though, I have a lifelong friend in this patient!

DR. LISA GALLUCCI
General Dentistry

What is your favorite way to unwind?
My favorite way to unwind is a good workout—cardio and weight lifting.

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
When a patient is overly anxious we let them know that they can take breaks when needed. We encourage them to ask any questions they may have about their procedure. Our team is very knowledgeable and can answer any questions to make them feel more at ease. We also have televisions and music in all rooms to help distract and make the patient more comfortable.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
The most rewarding part of my profession is when a patient arrives at our office for dental care because they no longer like to smile… And when we finish their treatment they are confident with their beautiful and healthy smile! It is that first smile following the completion of their treatment that is most gratifying. It can change people’s lives.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
The field of dentistry continues to excite me because of the advancements in the materials and products available to achieve beautiful esthetic outcomes. The technology today is amazing!

Any memorable patient stories you can share?
A patient who recently completed Invisalign came into the office for years wanting to straighten her teeth, especially her overlapped two front teeth. She wore braces as a child but, her teeth relapsed over the years. She never dreamed that Invisalign could accomplish this goal. After confidently explaining that we could help her achieve this goal we began treatment. Today she is so excited about her beautiful smile and she always refers to her mom looking down happily because dental care was always a high priority in their family.

DR. HOWARD D. LASSIN

How many years have you been practicing?
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1985 I started with my father in his dental practice. In total I have been practicing dentistry for 27 years.

What is your favorite way to unwind?
I enjoy relaxing and spending time with my family and friends. We enjoy going out to different and interesting restaurants.

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
I believe the best method and the one that has worked for us is the listening method. I feel that spending time to listen and understand our patients is paramount to putting them at ease. It’s all about developing caring and understanding relationships with all our patients.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
Dentistry is very rewarding for it can make positive changes in our patients’ lives. We are able to relieve pain that patient may have and also improve their smile and health. When our patients say they smile bigger and feel better it is a reminder of how amazing dentistry has evolved.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
Everything! The field has and is continuing to change almost daily. From lasers to dental implants to computer assisted restorations, the technology moves forward. It is the reason way our office continues advanced dental post-graduate education, so we can stay on top of the changing technology and treatments.

Any memorable patient stories you can share?
A recent patient story is that a gentleman who has not been to a dentist for over 15 years finally made it to our office. He would not smile or do any activities like going out for dinner, the movies … basically, he just stayed at home. After a dramatic dental makeover from implants to teeth he is a new person. He smiles all the time. Friends and family tell us how happy he is and how much he enjoys his life now. It is very rewarding when you can affect a person’s life so much.

DR. TERESA ADDIEGO
General Dentistry

How many years have you been practicing?
I have been practicing dentistry since 1989, or 23 years.

What is your favorite way to unwind?
My favorite way to unwind is to get to the beach, the most soothing sound of all being the waves hitting the shore.

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
I put patients at ease by promising them nothing will hurt, and then by keeping that promise. Once I have established that trust, patients will learn that going to my offiice is never a traumatic or painful experience.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
I feel rewarded every time a patient leaves healthier than they arrived and with a happy expression that lets me know my staff and I have treated them well.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
I am constantly excited about the new developments in my profession. One of the most exciting new improvements has been the continuing increase in laser dentistry. We can now fix many people's cavities and do most gum surgeries with the laser with no discomfort at all. There is such relief from patients when we do this technique and do not have to drill a tooth or give the patient an injection.

Any memorable patient stories you can share?
I am a very small person, only 5’1”. Once when I was a new dentist, an extremely tall and muscular man came to the office. He was dressed in a typical style of those who ride Harley Davidson Motorcycles, which is to say in full leathers. He needed a big, badly broken molar removed. I had to do a surgical extraction which involves taking the tooth out in pieces and suturing (stitches) the gums. When he returned for a follow up visit he had a bruise on his face that was within normal limits for the surgery performed. I felt very intimidated at this point. He was feeling fine, but said that he told his biker buddies he was in a fight with a trucker. He said “I couldn’t tell them that I let a little girl do this to me!” Needless to say, I was happy to see him laugh.

DR. MARIA O’REILY
Orthodontics

How many years have you been practicing?
I have been in practice for 37 years which includes teaching for 21 years at the University of Pittsburgh.

What is your favorite way to unwind?
Spending time with my two grandchildren, Lars, Lila and their dog Rookie. I also enjoy keeping myself in shape with Yoga, Pilates and my Zumba classes.

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
We have a very relaxed atmosphere which helps our patients feel comfortable... I like to show what is to be done that day, which helps my patients feel at ease with their treatment.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
It’s so nice to experience all the joy and and see the excitement on happy faces when treatment is completed and the braces come off. I have had the opportunity to experience this quite a bit and every time I do it feels like the first.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
The amount of research that has helped my profession to provide better treatment as well as the technology supporting the diagnosis, which in turn provides a better outcome for my patient.

Any memorable patient stories you can share?
There are many, but one that really touched me was when I noticed the change in self esteem and confidence of a patient after a team approach involving orthodontics and jaw surgery. It was a life changing experience and it’s rewarding to me to know that I could help and make a difference.

DR. JAMES TENBROOK
Orthodontics

How many years have you been practicing?
It will be 20 years next February!

What is your favorite way to unwind?
Fishing for largemouth bass on Union Lake [in Millville].

What is your preferred method at putting patients at ease?
Reassuring them that we are here to take care of them; give them plenty of TLC and education about the new technologies.

What is the most rewarding part of the profession for you?
Helping people and being a part of the development of their self-esteem and self confidence.

Is there anything that excites you about the future of your field?
The T1 Bracket and wire technology is allowing orthodontics to move teeth faster, build beautiful smiles, with little to no discomfort.

Any memorable patient stories you can share?
WOW! There are so many. Two that come to mind are: Treating Miss New Jersey 2010; what an honor to have treated and help create her beautiful smile! What an outstanding person. The second is treating a young man that had a cleft lip and palate. I knew his mom from high school, and she asked me if I could help. Of course I obliged. I would often talk to him and keep him “pumped up” as he went through his surgeries and his orthodontic treatment. Today he is a very handsome, productive young man. I am proud to be a part of his success. It’s a great feeling, to be able to help others.
